Countless of Dave Trottier's clients and screenwriting students have asked him for a rarity that most all developing screenwriters wish they had - a genuine spec screenplay with the following characteristics

-- It must be a spec script that a Hollywood reader fell in love with and recommended for purchase and production. At that point, the spec screenplay is converted into a shooting (or production) script.

-- The same successful script must also be written in industry standard, spec screenplay format. Developing screenwriters want to see how correct format enhances the presentation of the story.

This book contains two successful spec scripts in correct spec format. Both made it to the pre-production stage with established talent attached.

TWO SCRIPTS TO LEARN FROM

Actual spec scripts like these two are difficult to find because virtually all screenplays available to read or buy are shooting scripts, which often contain camera directions and other technical intrusions, such as scene numbers. Unless you are being paid to write, you are writing a spec script.

Now you can apply principles gleaned from reading these two screenplays to craft your own entertaining movie script.

A WINDOW IN TIME

Wrongly charged with treason, a brilliant young NASA engineer gets another shock a woman from the future claims to be his wife of ten years. Together they unravel a terrorist conspiracy, and ultimately travel to the future intending to foil the calamitous plot and undo his untimely death.

A SUMMER WITH HEMINGWAY'S TWIN
Ernest Hemingway had a twin? He did! And no one has told her story...until now. This lyrical ode to creativity reveals the Hemingway women as they were in 1939 Ernest s mother, his twin sister Marcelline, and the spunky coed who idolizes him and wants to write like him.

Both of the above screenplays come with introductory material about their history, content, and marketing.

It's good to see how a 'spec" script looks compared to the "shooting" scripts. There's not much difference however. I do like how the author added a couple of pages explaining things prior to script. I do wish there was more of this however.

Two Screenplays in correct spec format Dave Trottier 9781885655158 Books Reviews

This book contains two great examples of spec screenplays, and two great story's. I found it impossible to get my hands on a spec script. Having just completed my first spec screenplay I found this book invaluable. This book combined with Dave's Screenwriters Bible (the number 1 publication on the screenwriting profession in my opinion) and Dr. Format Tells All, give you all the information you need to launch, and then continue your career.
As soon as I looked at pages in this book, I knew what I had in my hands was a gem - two screenplays in an unadulterated spec form. I wanted to read "A Window in Time" (the author's Screenwriter's Bible has an excerpt) for several reasons - to see the story to conclusion (The Screenplay) and also to have a complete script example that essentially 'puts together' many of the format elements discussed in the "Bible". Perhaps an equally important reason for getting this book was to get a sense of what it takes (or to get a measure of the 'threshold' if you will) to have a spec script be successful.
Everyone who aspires to write a screenplay needs to have this book in their library. I consider it indispensable. This should be used as a Lab Reference Manual for The Screenwriter's Bible. The combination of both books will provide options and solutions for all of your script work. If you want to get it right the first time, consider this the secret formula for success. My only issue is that he didn't write it sooner!
"Two Screenplays (in correct spec format) ..." is a practical, well-written book that address problems any scriptwriter might face. It uses spec scripts with real-world examples instead of the commonly available shooting scripts found in other books and on the web. Spec scripts are what writers need to produce in order to make it past a script reader making this information most valuable.

Like all good writing instructors, Mr. Trottier does not tell you what to write. Instead, he focuses on how to make your writing clear and understandable. Within a few pages, I identified a problem I was having with a script and was able to find a solution (ok, I'm not done yet but progress is being made, a very good thing).

"Two Screenplays…" is a worthy companion to his "Dr. Format Tells All (4th edition)" book and "Ask Dr. Format by Dave Trottier" column at screenplay.com.

Highly recommended!
Two Screenplays (in Correct Spec Format) is a perfect companion to The Screenwriter's Bible and Dr. Format Tells All. Two Screenplays is a must-have for any screenwriter who wants to present their script to either an agent, studio executive or producer. For indie writers-directors-producers who are seeking "name talent" for their first film, Two Screenplays is essential. Just by reading the screenplays, not only are the stories themselves enjoyable, but one will see how a properly formatted screenplay reads and how it looks on the page. It is learning by example, and this book makes learning spec script formatting easy.
Fabulous insight in how to shape a screenplay - some may find it as that missing "link" their hours of work required!
Very helpful to have two spec screenplays to model from. Would have liked a little more explanation before each script.
Not on formatting, but perhaps tips on dialogue, action descriptions, etc. Overall a helpful guide for script layout.
It's good to see how a 'spec" script looks compared to the "shooting" scripts. There's not much difference however. I do like how the author added a couple of pages explaining things prior to script. I do wish there was more of this however.
