What a sweet story. I'm so glad I found free Kindle version. It was published in 1915. Carroll Watson Rankin is better known for Dandelion Cottage. I'm going to read that one soon. The description states this title has illustrations. Unfortunately they don't appear.
Spoil free description:
Jeanne Duval lives on Lake Superioir, not in a mansion, but in a ramshackle house on the end of an old, rickety dock. She and her four step brothers and sisters play on the banks, take baths in the shallow waters, and visit with their fishermen friends.
The family is very, very poor. They use straw for beds and don't have proper clothes to attend school. Jeanne's dad is saving his money so that she can go away to school and have a chance at a better life. You see, Jeanne is the daughter of his first wife. The love of his life. That woman died when Jeanne was two.
This story is full of sweet scenes, encounters with silly fishermen, grouchy aunts, sassy cousins, and lots, and lots of love and tenderness. It reminded me a lot of The Little Princess - but set in someplace completely different. There are some sad scenes, but I found myself crying for joy instead of anguish in a few spots.
This would be a great story for young, advanced readers - especially girls. Or perhaps a read-out-loud bedtime title. It will capture readers from the start with the opening scene- a boy in a fancy suit falls into the lake.
Lovely. So glad I read it.

The Cinder Pond Carroll Watson Rankin 9781530262465 Books Reviews
The story of a young girl who overcomes hardship with perseverance and love. Not as good as Rankin's Dandelion Cottage, but still a fun, light read.
It's been about 5 months since I read this, and it still goes through my mind. The characters, the story line, it ends a little fairy tailish, but on a positive note.
